It's All Moving So Quickly

This week is moving oh so quickly and I'm having a hard time keeping up but having said that, I nevertheless do feel great. I imagine I feel this way because finally things seem to be falling into place and I see the progression of what I've been working towards. I am in the flow so to speak...

Within the next few weeks I will be beginning a new blog over on WordPress. The WordPress site will also house my website. Nice and simple .... keep it simple! This blog will stay as a more journaling type of blog mostly for my friends and family but the new blog will represent the progression of my artwork and a few other fun things ... guess you'll just have to stop by and visit for yourself.

For those of you who have emailed asking me if I ever intend to sell my work online. Hmmm... that may happen with the new site. My vision all along has always been to sell the work in galleries as I think I'm just that type of artist and always will be but that being said, I may offer small 6"x6" or 5"x7" pieces online for anyone who is interested. Perhaps a piece a week. Before I begin a new larger work I always, always, complete a smaller piece, a study you could say. I never want to committ to work on a bigger scale if I haven't already worked out some of the logistics on a smaller format. Those pieces would be the ones I would be considering offering. I'm still playing around with the idea in my head. We will just have to see where that goes .....

For the past year or so I've been following a gallery I would absolutely love to be a part of. A few months ago I gathered up my courage and sent them an intro letter as well as a link to my website ( it seems most galleries are now interested in being approached this way rather than the formal package in the mail). I heard back from them quite quickly and we've been corresponding ever since. I will not name them because I'm not 100% sure of what will happen but I have a good feeling about the direction our conversations are taking. They are not in Ontario which is a plus since I'm looking to find representation outside of my own province. Fingers crossed....

It is a busy time....

Change ... It's Inevitable

I haven't always been that great with change and perhaps I'm still not but I'm getting there.

But oh, I am so in love with the word Flow ... sometimes I say it softly to myself, a mantra of sorts. To me it conjures up images of water gently skimming the surface of beach rocks or laundry hanging on the line on a breezy summer day under a cerlean sky. When I look at my life and how Flow presents itself in that realm I realize it is all about me being open to whatever happens without resistance. It is what my all time favourite spiritual book reminds me of everyday. I've mentioned in previous posts how
Stephen Mitchell's translation of The Tao Te Ching resonates most with me. I read a page everyday ... it centers me, it balances me, it presents a slight shift that I can feel within me.

My art continues to evolve and change ... that change excites me! Even though some of my earlier works still make me cringe, I feel it is important to revisit them now and again just to clearly see the big picture. You can't move forward without acknowledging where you've been.

So the work moves forward as do I. Which means shedding off the old and forging ahead with the new. Come Monday I (along with help cause God knows I can't do it alone) will be creating a combined website and blog on WordPress ... it's time and I love the idea of having both of them together as well as creating a site which is representational of me, my art and my life. I've also been getting a bit of help with marketing and other "art stuff" which I will discuss at some point in a future post.

The next few weeks will be busy ones but I'm up for the challenge (she says nervously biting her nails down to the quick) Yeah, I'm slowly warming up to change because in life it is all you can really be certain of.

Friday morning we woke up to a blanket of white ..... I caught this shot just as the sun was coming up over our little part of the world. Beautiful but snow?? Not quite ready yet. By day's end it had all melted but left most of us running off to our nearest service station to get those dreaded snow tires on.

The weekend was lovely......sunny .....

We were invited to our friends for dinner ... a 100 mile dinner to boot...

Daylight Saving Time .....seriously???

Hard to believe daylight savings time has come and gone. Am I the only one still holding onto the last shred of autumn I can find? I mean I totally understand that November has arrived, having had a birthday and all but the news of snow flurries come the end of the week is almost too devastating to wrap my head around. I do live in Canada .... I am a Canadian ...this should not surprise me but for some crazy reason right around this time of year, every year, it does.

I'm loving waking up early in the morning and being greeted by a bright, beautiful sky but do confess to feeling that SAD disorder kick in right about 4:30 every night.... too dark too soon.

Slowly but surely I will become accustomed to the shorter days and the cooler temps but for now I think I'll just keeping taking advantage of those nice long walks and enjoying the gifts that autumn is still so generously providing...and I will until the last leaf falls....

A Birthday Filled With Gratitude

Yesterday was my birthday ........

Isn't it funny how people always seem to ask if you feel any different on that day than you did the day before ... but surprisingly enough I did feel different this year..... I felt more gratitude than I had ever felt on any other birthday...could be age but I like to think of it as simply being totally present and open to whatever the day would bring...

The sun shone that morning which was a gift in itself.

My friend Dyanne came over in the a.m. with a cranberry birthday muffin complete with candle which she lit. I made coffee and we sat outside with the sun shining on our faces. Enjoying the day and enjoying our time together....both being present.

John and I took a walk late in the day .....

I heard from friends and family whose love and support I cherish everyday ....

I received a call from my friend Bianca whom I've known since grade four. She and I just recently connected up via Facebook. She said she wanted to call me in person to wish me a happy day .... (gulp) big lump in my throat over that. We shared precious memories together of being young girls, teenagers and then finally adults but unfortunately we lost touch as human beings sometimes tend to do. The important thing is we have reconnected and have new memories to make...

Say what you want about Facebook but I have met so many incredible people who share the same passion and joy about art that I do. Some I've met some I haven't. So many of them wrote on my wall yesterday (if you don't know Facebook it means they left me a message saying Happy Birthday) and I don't think I could ever tell them how much that meant to me. Simple things such as that make me feel overwhelmed and thankful. There really is so much kindness and generosity in the world but unfortunately is seems to somehow get overshadowed by all the bad news we constantly hear.

John made me an incredible dinner......he's special like that!

So on my birthday I can truly say "I felt the love" which may sound corny to some but it was the prevailing feeling of the day and I will always carry that with me.....but for now I'm going to go and try and "pass it on"........

Happy Hallowe'en .......

Sierah was home last week so we decided to buy a pumpkin early as she enjoys the carving more than either John or I or Holly for that matter. The best part as far as I'm concerned are the seeds ... with lots of salt and butter. Not a heart smart choice by an means but delicious all the same. This year I held off buying any candy until yesterday since I've been known in years past to plow through a box of 100 chocolate bars in record time. What I really need to do is buy candy that I don't particularly like but since I can't think of any off the top of my head ... I must practice discipline. Although I do despise rockets and that horrible brown sticky toffee wrapped in waxy wrappers wth a pumpkin face on it but even I wouldn't inflict that on anyone. When I was a kid that's all we got along with this crazy old lady who threw apples at us as we were walking onto her porch. Speaking of traumatizing childhood Hallowe'en experiences .... one of my favourite episodes of Modern Family aired last week......that show never fails to crack me up. Watch a clip here

Thanksgiving weekend was as perfect a weather weekend as you could possibly dream of but everyday after that has quite frankly .... sucked. More rain than my Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can take....talk about dreary and depressing. So on Sunday when the sun made itself known I was one happy girl. It was still chilly as the clouds swirled about overhead but when the warmth hit my face .... bliss.

My sister was up from the city with her man so we all took a walk after breakfast......

And then of course there was the removal of all those gorgeous leaves.....

Road Trip, Delicious Food and a Fab Recipe to Boot!

Saturday we left to visit our good friends Karen and Jason who live a couple of hours from us. We made the plan while sitting on the beach drinking cold beers this summer and a good plan it was.

Surprisingly enough Holly wanted to come along as well as she's become interested in sewing her own clothes (yes, she now has my machine) and Karen teaches Fashion at at the high school where she lives. The weather called for rain all weekend (they are always wrong... what's going on Environment Canada?) but we left on a perfect fall day. Holly hooked up her ipod to the car radio and slowly introduced us to rap hoping in some small way we may become converts.. ... no such luck. She started off with Rihanna & Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie" cause I actually have that song on my ipod and like it but after that it all went down hill. We both like Adele so we listened to her the rest of the way especially this song. Her voices blows me away.

On the way we stopped for lunch here....

Friends introduced us to this restaurant years ago and I have never forgotten it. Unbelievably fabulous food.

I had an incredible tomato vegetable soup....

and the mother of all salads ... I mean where have you ever seen a salad that's a work of art??? I almost hated to eat it. The dressing was some sort of raspberry vinigrette but when I asked the waiter it sounded like the chef "wasn't in the mood for sharing"

That night we enjoyed dinner with our friends and a delicious Pad Thai and they were in the mood for sharing ....

So speaking of food and recipes, I made this awesome Fire Vegetable Broth Soup with Sausage last Thursday night. It was from Karen at The Art of Doing Stuff .. she always has great recipes and she makes me laugh too...

Sunday Stuff

Sunday turned out to be stellar ... sunny, breezy, gorgeous skies .. the most perfect fall day.

John's fishing plans fell by the wayside as we decided to spend the day doing stuff around the house. At first that didn't seem like such a fabulous plan to me but I eventually got in the spirit and enjoyed myself. We spent a few hours rearranging my studio so I could take my larger canvases (30"x60") and hang them directly on the wall rather than an easel. Holly's boyfriend was over so that saved me from throwing my back out by trying to help John move the mammoth wooden desk that sits in the corner....

On Saturday we were at the farmer's market and bought a big basket of organic tomatoes...I wish I could say we had planned this out like the good little canners we aren't....but we didn't. We came up with the brilliant idea that we would make some sauce. We are strictly amateurs at this point but next year....look out.

We took the skins off with was super easy by just throwing the tomatoes into boiling water for a minute and then tossing them into a bowl of ice water ... easy peasy. I don't mind seeds so we left them in.

Found a "how to " this a.m. from Karen at "The Art of Doing Stuff" which we may use next year minus the tomato press but who knows. We may think it's so much fun we'll pick one up for ourselves ...or maybe not. Will revisit that idea next year.

Over at the Cottage Nest , Jen suggests this delicious recipe from Martha Stewart Living for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Squares. Haven't tried it as of yet but Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

Work in the studio is going well. I'm really pleased with the direction in which my work is headed.

I had a great first meeting with Lyn at The Tangerine Gecko Gallery last week while I was in the city visiting with my mom. She is looking for big work for the gallery so Monday of next week I'll be giving my 30"x60" a go. Below is the 24"x36" I've just begun. It is in it's very early stages but as you can see it will be quite dark.

The last couple of days we've been picking apples off of our two trees in the backyard, at least the ones the birds haven't had a chance to peck away at. They are still a touch tart but I like them that way. This morning I put a sweater on after I got out of bed ... autumn has arrived.

Thought I should check in but unfortunately I don't have a whole hell of a lot to say.

I was in the city for two days last week dropping off new work for The Village Gallery and visiting with my family. It was good times for sure.

One night after a huge helping of chinese food and a beer or two my sister decided to stay over at my moms with me. We slept in the guest room which has two twin beds identical to what our room was like when we were little kids. It felt like being 8 years old all over again as we lay there talking in the dark, laughing and giggling. Good memories shared. My sister and I were never very close growing up as we were both so different in personality and interests but as the years have worn on I feel we have developed a relationship that has grown deep and strong. It is a relationship that comforts me.

The Summer I First Believed

I'm doing my best to remain focused today as I've got a lot on the go and feel I'm falling behind. I spent yesterday rearranging my cupboards and thoroughly cleaning out my kitchen which was an accomplishment but in the end I wasn't standing in front of the easel.

The above piece is either going to go to The Village Gallery or Tangerine Gecko Gallery. I'm headed to the city next week with deliveries for both. The Matilda Swanson I will visit sometime in later September and The Silverbridge in a couple of weeks.

On the way back from Peterborough last weekend John and I stopped at this really cool spot that we had read about in the Globe and Mail. It is the site of one of the largest Buddhist Temples to be built in North America, if not the largest. It my take years to complete with the main building being 65,000 square feet. It will be open to the public.

A few photos of the day....

The property is absolutely stunning. I could see the Buddha's head in the distance which will be part of a stone statue weighing 100 tonnes. I wanted to get a closer look but the gate was closed with a No Trespassing Sign and I wasn't willing to climb it. I may have done that 20 years ago but now I'll just be patient and wait until the gates open to the public.

Me & The Girls

I'm a really lucky mom and believe me I know it.

My girls and I have always been super close. I'm thankful of that each and everyday. I knew when I first became pregnant that my intention was to have a relationship with my children just like the loving relationship I had and still have with my mom.

I mothered my daughters like my mom mothered me..... and there is such gratitude in that.

I wondered as the teenage years approached if all that which change but with a few bumps and bruises along the way, it really hasn't.

So the past weekend was of course a difficult one as my oldest returned for her second year of university after an entire summer at home. You would think these things get easier but they really don't.

Did I cry when I left?

Of course I did, as did she, but I left with the knowledge that she is happy, she has lots of friends, she's an amazing, independent young woman with so much a head of her. This is just another step on her path. But....her dad and I are only a phone call away if she needs us and we always will be....she knows that.

But I am still a mom and couldn't leave without helping her.......

I received an email yesterday from Connie who asked me if I was still working in textiles as she hadn't seen me post any work in a long time. That got me to thinking that perhaps I'd forgotten/neglected to touch on this subject or that maybe I already did but am too lazy to go back and check ... maybe the latter.

Anyway, to make a long story short... for the forseeable future the sewing machine has been retired and I'll tell you why.

A little over a year ago I began feeling the need to work on a much larger scale but couldn't wrap my head around how I could possibly manage that in machine embroidery. I started to get the itch to experiment and to try something new. One week while my machine was in being serviced I was cleaning out another one of the dreaded closets in our house that seems to house all the junk we've collected over the years, and low and behold I came across a couple of canvases. I started simply playing and wow could I ever feel the hook. Moving the paint around the canvas just felt so freeing after the years spent being committed to each stitch my machine put down. I produced two small pieces that I somewhat liked and could see a small glimmer of hope to where this might lead. I continued to stay within a realm I was comfortable with which was 8"x8" or 10"x10"... I was pretty scared of going too big too fast, thinking that maybe I would get discouraged and give up.

A few months later I had a couple friends over who wanted me to give them a tour of my studio. Seeing that it is a tiny space it was a pretty short tour but they saw the few paintings I had finished and asked if they were for sale ..... it kind of took off from there.

I approached both of my representing galleries at the time, The Village Gallery and The Silverbridge and they were very receptive to taking my paintings. In September I will head up the Blue Mountain way to The Matilda Swanson Gallery who have asked that I bring larger paintings since that is what most of their clients purchase. Last week I was speaking with The Tangerine-Gecko Gallery in Markham and they are interested in taking a few paintings as well. So it looks like I will have a fairly busy fall.

I've never really entertained any ideas of being a painter as I was pretty happy in my little niche but it just goes to show you just never know where life will take you. Through unforseen circumstances, a desire to produce larger pieces and a whole hell of a lot of hard work .... this is where I find myself.

I will always love texile work and am so very proud of the quality of the work I've accomplished over the years but for now I am happy here in my tiny little studio, paintbrush in hand......

For The Love of A Lake

Lake Superior is the most beautiful lake I've ever experienced...hands down...enough said!

It has the ability to be calm and serene but within a short period of time the waves are crashing in on the beach with such incredible force and energy it will take your breath away. I will never tire of watching the beauty of that water and it's unpredictability. There is a feeling of aliveness that overcomes you just being there in that space.

I did a lot of drawing while sitting on the beach as the skies were absolutely incredible ... it continues to remind me of how small I really am in the scope of things....makes you grateful...makes you humbled.

There was a crazy amount of blueberries this year. We had them all around the camp (fyi...people in northern ontario call their cottage a camp...took me years to get used to this but think I've come around now) just pick em and eat em.

John's mom, Ruth, served us the most amazing meal on our last night there right out on the deck overlooking the lake. Such attention to detail ....it was the most gorgeous setting for a dinner.

And even though I am not physically there today .... this place continues to live in my memories, my heart and my soul.

Today I'm working in studio on two pieces I've got up on the easel. One is a small 8"x10" and the other a 24"x 24" .. both landscapes. Hopefully I'll make some progress today and then around 5pm head over to our local farmers market. I am so spoiled to be able to walk up the street every Friday and pick up local produce, jams, breads and organic meat. Our little village does seem to have it all.

Florence Part II

Someone asked me the other day if I could live in Florence for a year would I?

In a heartbeat .....

There was so much to see in that city and even though we walked all day everyday I feel as if we only scratched the surface.

John and Sierah spent time every morning going over the map ... I'm totally confused when it comes to maps so I stayed out of it. Judging by the beer at the table I'd say it was early afternoon... we are not known to be consuming vast amounts of alcohol at breakfast....

The second day there we managed to get tickets to the Accademia to see Michelangelo's David. There is a variety of art within the Accademia from various time periods which we took in but when you feast your eyes upon David it is jaw dropping. I don't think I've ever been as moved by an artwork as I was by him. 17 feet tall and so unbelievably detailed down to the veins in his arms. There are no words to describe his beauty. He is situated in such a place that you are able to walk totally around him to take it all in. I spent the most time there just marvelling at how something this extraordinary could come from the vision of one man and be scultpted out of one piece of marble. A masterpiece....

We ate a lot..mostly pizza which I'm not generally a bit fan of but Italian pizza is a whole other ball game. So fresh and so simpe it just screams to be consumed and consume I did..

Here we are continuing to photograph almost everything we ate ...tsk..tsk... what tourists!

We also visited The Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens which were stunning.. you can read more about them here.

On our walk there we saw a variety of artists selling their work which was mostly watercolour. John bought a small piece for his office.

We also came upon this fabulous wall in which people had hung frames around their artwork.

So cool

I knew I wanted to purchase something in Italy but I wanted it to be something that totally symbolized what being in Italy meant to me. Something that resonated and was special. I had set aside a dollar amount and wasn't willing to go over that. One day we were walking back from the hotel and we found this amazing little shop complete with a big old dog sleeping on the floor. It was called Alberto Cozzi and it was a book binding shop. I spoke with the lady there for quite some time and then I met Alberto who was busy working. He told me this shop has been in his family since 1908 and they still run it today. I saw a beautiful leather journal cover and was informed that they would emboss it for me while I waited. In that moment I knew that was my "one thing" I journal everyday as well as sketch so it fit me to a tee...perfect in everyway. I watched as he lit the flame and heated up the letters that make up my name and voila .... like I said perfect in everyway.

Florence was the dream trip of a lifetime for me.

Florence, Italy is magical.........

I've been trying to think of how best I could describe it all morning long and that's the only word that kept popping up.

It is like no place I've ever been....

We ended up arriving in Italy much later than we intended as we missed our connecting flight out of Germany and had to wait another two hours for the next available flight to Florence. But we didn't stress and just figured we'd get there when we did.

When we finally checked in we couldn't wait to start walking around and walk we did for the next six days. Florence is known as "a walking city" and that is the only way to truly see it as there are unexpected discoveries to be made down every small alleyway.

I discovered Gelato

I didn't manage to eat myself through every flavour but that wasn't from lack of trying..

We did the typical tourist thing and photographed out Gelatos ... like that didn't center us out from the locals.

Our hotel was situated right down town alongside the Arno River .. the views were spectacular each and every day.

Last Tuesday my cousin Glen passed away. I heard the news on Thursday.

He was only 51.

If he were here today I would say ........

The last time I saw you was years ago at another family funeral ... so unfortunate the way that always seems to happen. We make promises to "get in touch" and "see each other soon" but it never really works out that way. Once we get home life just gets in the way.... raising kids, jobs, other relationships, commitments and before you know it ....we simply forget.

I wish I had known you and your family better. I do know you have two daughters who are close in age to my girls. I know you are married to sweet Lynne and it is she who I can't seem to get off my mind these last few days. How beautiful and happy she was the day of your wedding ... I can only imagine her heartbreak now as she journeys through life without her husband and her best friend. I think of your girls, Victoria and Hillary, and I do understand their pain, having lost my own father, your Uncle Paul at 53 years old. Far too young

I've spent time this past weekend reading the condolences from your friends and family and they speak of a good man, husband, father and friend. A man whose life touched others and made their lives all the better for having known you. And although you are gone far too soon, a man who was deeply loved by all her knew him and knew how to love deeply is a sweet and rich legacy to leave behind.

Yes, a good life indeed.

This week is going to be crazy busy no doubt about it. My inlaws arrived yesterday afternoon for Holly's graduation on Wednesday, they head home Thursday morning and then my family arrives for Canada Day celebrations in the Village. It's all quite civilized as we have a parade down mainstreet at 1 o'clock complete with floats and and then a Strawberry Social at the community hall. The farmer's market officially opens in the village as well and will run until September. Lots of organic produce, jams, breads, baked goods and we always have live entertainment which comes in the form of someone singing with a guitar. I will take lots of pics and post here next week.

The above piece is DONE. I've been working on it for the past three weeks on and off and it's ready to be varnished and sent out to find a home of it's own. Very pleased with it most especially the water as I was trying to capture what I see when I look out over Lake Superior ... the power and beauty of that extraordinary lake.

John and I headed out on the bikes on Sunday for a couple hours ... it was a great day

Finding My Place

Trees have always been one of my biggest inspirations.... trees and skies.... hands down!

I can't even fathom what it would be like to live in a place where I was not surrounded by the beauty of trees. I'm also in love with the symbolic nature of them ... one of strength, resilence and flexibility. Many good life lessons there. ........

Today my daughter showed me the trailer of a movie she thought I would be moved by and I was. Toward the end of it I could even feel a small tear starting to form ... most of the time I'm just this big emotional freak. The last scene in this trailer just about summed it up for me.... nothing more needs to be said....

"How come your not so sad anymore?"

"Well, you have a choice to be happy or sad and I chose to be happy and I am happy"

Rhubarb/Strawberry Crisp

This recipe was originally called Rhubarb Honey Crisp but I threw in 1 or 2 cups of strawberries because.....................

1. I love strawberries

2. I love strawberries

3. I love strawberries

Rhubarb/Strawberry Honey Crisp

5 cups Chopped Rhubarb

1/2 cup Liquid Honey

1 tbsp All Purpose Flour

1 tsp Cinnamon

1/2 tsp Ginger (optional) ... I didn't use it

Topping

1-1/2 cups Large flake rolled oats

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup liquid honey

1/4 cup melted butter

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

In mixing bowl stir together rhubarb, honey, flour, cinnamon and ginger (if using) until well combined. Spoon into greased 8 cup baking dish.

Toppiing: In same mixing bowl stir together oats, sugar, honey, butter, cinnamon and salt; sprinkle evenly over rhubarb

Bake in 375 degree F oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and topping is browned.

** Easy, peasy recipe but such a fabulous summer dessert.... I served mine warm with french vanilla ice cream. I also didn't use the total amount of honey called for... I used just under 1/2 cup because I added the strawberries which were sweet and because I like a tiny bit of tartness from the rhubarb.

A Morning in The Village

This morning I took a ride on the "Zen" bike through the village and this is what I saw.............

An absolutely gorgeous morning. This was one of those days in which the gratitude cup was running over. I sometimes forget how lucky I am to live here and to have the opportunity to experience this beautiful part of my world.

I just picked some rhubarb from the garden for a strawberry/rhubarb crisp I'm going to make .......this recipe is super delicious so if anyone wants it feel free to email me as I'd be happy to share

Both of the girl's boyfriends will be here for dinner tonight so I I'll be throwing on my Martha Stewart hat

So art as well as everything else in my life took a backseat on Friday because it was my youngest daugher's prom. Crazy, exciting non stop day of running and driving trying to do my best to make sure it was a perfect day for her..... and it was. A 90 minute visit to see my favourite hair stylist Eric at Salon ID where she was treated like a queen ... big thanks to them as always.... eventually we arrived back home to gather her "stuff" then off to her friends where all the girls were getting their make up done then out to the park for pics. There was a dinner at the local country club and then an after party...and no I don't want to know about the after party .. I can only imagine...

Can't believe my baby is graduating high school ... such a beautiful and exciting journey in store for her...

A Day in the City

Tuesday I headed down to Toronto as I was long overdue to deliver new work to The Village Gallery.....always a pleasant experience as I've mentioned previously how much I like both Megan and Alison. You simply can't ask for a better representing gallery as they are both so supportive and kind. My sister came with me and afterward we headed out to this fabulous raw food restaurant called Raw Aura. Last year when the gallery had it's opening of Bloom they had Raw Aura cater it and the food was amazing.

Laurie and I ordered the "big salad" which consisted of romaine lettuce, kale, red onion, chickpeas, mixed seeds and avacado.......big time yummy!

I've really come to love Port Credit with all the small shops and galleries. Lots of condos going up....I guess if I was dreaming big time I'd keep my home here and buy one of these as well........

Although "retirement living" isn't on my immediate radar, these condos look gorgeous. Then if the dream continued I'd be eating here every night.....

When I got home yesterday the heat was almost unbearable....lots of humidity and crazy storm clouds overhead. Our power cut out at 2:30pm and then the wind gusts and rain began........really fierce

Our power was finally restored around 9:30 a.m. and which makes me a happy girl. Today I'm back in the studio as I've got to finish up work for The Matilda Swanson Gallery.....

Yesterday was a bit of a blur:

Dropped Holly off at school at 7:45 a.m.

I had a physio appointment at 8 am. (chronic neck stuff and a bit of TMJ ... that's what you get for standing over a sewing machine for 12 years)

Headed out to drop off work at The Woodside Gallery for the show on Saturday. I thought the gallery was open at 10:00 a.m. (silly me, they don't open until 10:30) but when no one had arrived by 10:20 I had to run.

Met my good friend Diane at Starbucks ... love the Tazo Chais. Always a guaranteed good time

Off to Currys Art Supply for some varnish, on my way home heard from Robin at the gallery, felt like a big idiot

Back to the gallery and ended up meeting up with Janet Donaghey who is the other artist in the show on Saturday

Finally home but spent hours finishing up paintings for a drop off at The Village Gallery on Tuesday

Crashed early but not before John told me he would come with me to the opening on Saturday ....

“Threads”. an exhibition of textile and mixed media works by Janet Donaghey and Melody Madden, opens with an artist reception this Saturday June 4. Two exceptionally talented artists, both are deeply influenced by the landscapes, forests and colours of Simcoe County where they live and work. It is a real treat for us to put their work together.

Janet’s appreciation of texture and her love of vibrant colour are revealed over and over in her art. "I am inspired" she says “ by the beauty of crumbling stone walls and weathered wood, the rich green foliage of a rain forest and the red earth of outback Australia. At home in Ontario, I watch the multi-coloured sunsets from my kitchen window and from my studio I look out on densely wooded ravines and in the distance, the fields of a working farm".

Melody says of her work: “through my work I try to explore the persistence of things. I compare my free motion embroidery to a painters brush using the machines needle to create depth shadow and light … the use of both paint and thread and at times wool and silk is very exciting to me….Within my art glimpses of everyday merge with fragments of memory and personal experience.”

“Threads” opens with an artist’s reception Sat. June 4 from 12 – 4pm.

The exhibition runs to July 6. The gallery is open weekdays 10:30 - 5:30 and weekends 10.00– 5:30.

Show At The Craighurst Gallery

The past weekend turned out to be much nicer weather wise then was reported so I donned the rubber boots and did a bit of gardening. When I say "a bit" I really mean a bit. As much as I wish I was, I am not anywhere near the gardener that Tracy Helgeson is. But I did pick weeds out of the spinach patch to which John asked "about 10 weeds?" but according to my back it was much more than that.

I call an email from Hartley Woodside from The Craighurst Gallery last week asking if I'd be interested in teaming up with Janet Donaghey for a show on Saturday June 4th. Janet is a textile/mixed media artist who was on the Images Tour last year. So although short notice I think I'll put some of my older pieces in with some of the newer.

Purple Haze

Both of these pieces are older works and are created in a method I don't really use much anymore but I thought it would be fun to show them again.

Purple Haze consists of collaged fabric as well as embroidered trees that I've mounted on painted canvas. It just makes it easier for hanging as I haven't framed either of these. Framing is always an option if I buyer decides to. Tiger Butterfly is constructed in the same way, fabric collaged background with embroidered butterfly.

This may be one of the last (never say never) times some of this work will be shown as my paintings have really started to take off sales wise so unfortunately my textile work has begun to take a back seat. Not to say I'll never create new work in this genre but for now my focus is elsewhere. Can't do everything.....

Not sure what time the opening of the show is but will post it when I know.

So it looks like the long predicted Rapture didn't materialize yesterday so to me that means today I've got to do laundry. There's always a trade off isn't there?

Today I'm sticking around and finishing up a few pieces I have on the go. I've been promising John I would paint a diptych for his office which completed would end up measuring 48"x48".... rather intimidating which is probably why I haven't even put the canvases up on the easel yet.... maybe today....who am I kidding...maybe next week.

The last few days have just flown by as I've been spending much more time in the studio. I'm currently working on about five different pieces varying in size from 6"x6" to 30"x24". Everything from landscapes to skyscapes which I'll continue to post here before they head to gallery.

I'm feeling an incredibly strong direction in my work these days partly because I think I'm really finding my own path and what work brings me closer to that path and what work doesn't. The work continues to evolve just as I do which brings me great happiness because I believe that's what were all here for.

I think I mentioned in my last post how I spent last Sunday just being "in flow" with whatever happened which is big for me because I've always been one of those people who felt best when I was trying to control situations that arose in my life. John has been known to call me a "control freak"

But as days pass and I grow older and hopefully a little bit wiser (maybe), I'm warming up to the idea of "flow". ... yeah I'm loving that word.

Yesterday Sierah and I actually got to spend some one on one time together... the first since she arrived home at the end of April from her first year at university.

We made a day of it and shopped, laughed, visited Starbucks (I with my old standby chai latte and her with a coffee...yeah she drinks coffee now...that's what a year at university will do to you) headed to Roots and oohed and ahhed over the leather bags...bought a few new summer clothes....simply put...we just hung out. There was a moment when I just sort of stood back and saw her, really saw her and realized that my daughter had grown up and that I sure liked and respected the smart, confident, kind and generous woman that stood in front of me.... it's all about the flow.

Sunday's Possibilities

Sunday morning I awoke with the thought that all things were possible. Maybe I shouldn't say it was a thought as much as a feeling and a good one at that.

It simply felt like it was going to be that kind of day

I also decided I wasn't going to allow my "planning mode" to kick in but instead I was just going to let the day unfold the way it would without any sort of micro managing on my part.

The last few years I've wanted to plant a wild rose bush....the smell is nothing short of intoxicating. They grow scattered everywhere at our small cottage on the shores of Lake Superior. When John was there last week he dug one up and brought it home to me as a gift. Today after a long night's rain we headed outside with our shovels and began to dig ... did I say "we?". He dug, I watched. I'm a good watcher.

It was cloudy and cool with the threat of rain but luckily it held off while we checked out the garden, the yard and planted some spinach.

After some time spent inspecting my, I mean John's handiwork we managed to convince

Sierah to head out with us for a bike ride.

Today I started the process of reorganizing all my "stuff" as I haven't since I moved to this new spot. I more or less just dumped everything in there and worked around it but today the sun was shining and I was feeling inspired. Although my studio is small and a tad cramped I still smile whenever I walk through the door ... mostly cause I'm grateful to have a place to be ...

The last year one my of most favourite books has been Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao Te Ching... I keep it on my night table.

In eighty one brief chapters, The Tao Te Ching or Book of The Way, provides advice that imparts balance and perspective, a serene and generous spirit and teaches us how to work for the good with effortless skill that comes from being in accord with the Tao - the basic principle of the universe.

The passage that is resonating with me most these days reads as follows:

Mother's Day Weekend was simply wonderful.

I was in the city celebrating two special events....my Mom's 74th birthday

as well as my niece's performance in her high school play.

Both were fabulous!

Roses were presented at the end of the performance as is the proper etiquette for all superstars

and then we headed out for some food, a few drinks and simply enjoyed to the fullest time spent together.

Back at home the rhubarb and asparagus are both up

and yes it finally feels like spring is here.

The Easter Weekend was a lovely one with friends and family around ... busy but wonderful all the same. Saturday night we spent colouring eggs which we've done with the girls for as long as I can remember. Sierah is now home from university for the summer so it was all the more special.

There has been an incredible amount of rain and wind here in Southern Ontario the past while so although it poured all day yesterday, at around 6:00 pm it stopped completely and the sun came out. John and I decided to drop everything and spend some time simply enjoying the outdoors ... well, the front yard which is still technically the "outdoors"

Art Race

So I've finally dug myself out of the trenches of sickness and am (happily) back on my feet and moving ahead. This crazy flu just reared it's ugly head out of absolutely nowhere on Monday and I was in bed for a solid three days straight. I was supposed to pick my daughter up from work on Monday night but ended up calling my "sweet" and I mean "totally sweet" neighbour Gail and asking for a huge favour and she, out of the goodness of her heart, drove her home. By Monday night I was really weak and couldn't fathom getting into the car and driving to town .... friends are the ultimate blessing.

So come day two, between sleeping and throwing up, I managed to get caught up on my most favourite show aptly named "Art Race". Although I'm not a big reality tv watcher, this show is such a guilty indulgence. I mean what could be better than a reality show featuring two aritsts surviving on only their art?????

Since the site can explain much better than moi.....here you go...the premise in a nutshell

Two artists, Ben Sargent and Kenny Harris, set out to cross America surviving only on their art. Armed with just $1, they must trade their work for lifts, beds and food to travel across America in 40 days. Will their art get them from coast to coast? The pair must make their way as quickly as possible to their final destinations - the winner is the first one back and the loser must return all their hard-earnt cash.

I will confess that I love Kenny. He is sweet and gentle and an incredible artist. Gorgeous landscapes and figurative work in oils as well as his ability to sketch in ink and watercolour at the drop of a hat. Ben strikes me as quite the free spirit... but he's not Kenny. I'm about maybe a little more than halfway through the show which I tape every Thursday...can't wait to see them both have the opportunity to exhibit their work for the public.

For now I'm off as I have a house load of guests arriving Friday for Easter and there is much to be done.....

The last few days I've been in my old studio, which is really just a spare bedroom, clearing out all my older work, frames, fabric, threads and an overwhelming mess of old papers. I've decided to let Sierah have this room when she comes home from university as Holly moved into her room before the bed was even cold. Now before you go thinking I'm this incredibly selfless mother let me tell you that the light in that room was never right. Mornings, which just happen to be my most creative time period were always dull and gloomy in there and it wasn't until around 3 in the afternoon that the sun came shining through. I've moved everything into the office downstairs which is this light filled space that remains that way most of the day. There are two storage closets as well which will be perfect for storing all "my stuff", at least that is when I clean them out.

So going through some of my older works has been quite interesting to say the least. Thought I would share a few with you.

The piece above "The Long Walk Home" was a real challenge as most of it is completed using only thread. The background is a collage of threads and fabric but the woman, the child's hair and top are all done in thread.

In this piece the background is collaged with fabric and threads as is the tree but the egg is done solely in thread. I think this was one of the first pieces in which I used a brown background but with the gold it really pops.

The Walk has always been one of my favs ... love that African influence of colour and the beads. Once again, background is collaged with fabric and thread... her dress and basket is completed in thread.

So there you have it, a short but sweet walk down memory lane. Funny to see some of these pieces again and to remember where I was in my life at the moment they were made. I call them it my "fabric collage" period.

Anyway, must run as there are a growing number of closets that need to be cleaned out and who knows what I'll find in them.

Superior's Beauty

With all this talk I've been doing lately about spring, I honestly think I'm jinxing it. Took the Zen bike out again yesterday and made it around the block still wearing my winter coat and gloves.... kind of crazy but I'm in spring mode and I'm not going back.

With that in mind, I thought I'd share a bit more of the majestic beauty of summer on Lake Superior. A majority of the inspiration for my work comes from this part of the world............

Earth Hour and The Zen Bike

Saturday night between 8:30 and 9:30 was Earth Hour or Earth Day which is what I kept mistakenly calling it.

Regardless of the name, we had a few friends over for snacks or maybe I should say hors d'oeuvres which sounds so much more refined than snacks which always reminds me of chips and pretzels. We enjoyed a bit of the red, a great crab drip, garlic stuffed olives, Carr's cracker (my favs) and some really old Balderson cheese. We were originally supposed to go for a walk but I chickened out because it was -10C and I'm a bit of a baby that way. We turned off all the lights around 8:00 p.m. and lit the candles and I thought "wow, we should do this more often"..... but we probably won't. I seem to always have these great ideas but never follow through ... I think there's a name for that but at the moment it slips my mind.

I am getting ahead of myself so let's backtrack to the morning of Earth Hour/Earth Day or perhaps 23 years ago when John and I first got married and lived in the west end of Toronto....Royal York and Bloor to be exact for all you Torontoians. We used to bike everywhere but most especially downtown as Toronto has some absolutely fabulous bike paths. Along the way we would stop for a bite to eat or a coffee or whatever as we were young and free which meant we had no kids and no responsibilities to be anywhere at anytime.... fun. As the years rolled by and kids came along the biking thing kind of fell by the wayside and every so often we'd head out as a family but our days of adventure seeking (anyone who knows me will think that's funny cause I am so NOT an adventure seeker) were waning. So let's now skip ahead.... are you with me so far???

The morning of Earth Hour/Earth Day we headed into the office as usual but earlier in the week John had been scouting out bikes for us at The Bike Stop in Orillia without telling me. So we make a pit stop on the way and he shows me the bike he thought would be the "perfect" for vehicle for me. He called it the Zen bike which was most likely because it appeared to have bamboo sprouts covering it as well as it's name..... The Wasabi. Anyway, never being one to take what's given, I test drove a couple different bikes out on Colborne Street wearing my winter jacket, hat and mitts (yes, I was quite the site to see) before it dawned on me that the Zen bike really was the one for me. It was not a mountain bike or a road bike but the most perfectly comfortable "cruiser". In the end The Bike Stop made two sales and we were on our way.

The most fabulous seat ever.....made for people who have real bums.....and like bamboo....

Today we headed out for a ride and made it up and down the street a couple of times before the bitter wind and cold sent us back inside for a cup of tea but you must admit our intentions were good.

But hey, spring is only beginning and I can see a lot more rides in my immediate future....at least when the weather heats up to a balmy +5C.

Sunday morning I drove Holly into work early which didn't sound like that great of an idea at the time but ended up being totally blissful.

With not another soul in sight and the stillness of the morning, I did feel unbelievably connected in that moment and undeniably happy.

I, like everyone else, go about my day trying to remain grateful for the small things because let's face it, it really is the millions of small things that truly make up our lives....but Sunday morning... it was special.

The promise of spring is in the air and with it comes the hope of possibility.

Judging by the weather of the last few days I think I can confidently say that "spring has arrived in the village". We are in for rain and mild temps for the next few days...........ahhh Spring....so inspiring!

Lately I've been monitoring how "springlike" the weather has been by a morning check on my lonely reindeer's head. Sadly, we've neglected to put him away even though Christmas has been over for close to three months now but that's a story for another day. For weeks on end the poor little guy wasn't visible at all...but today when I took a peek, low and behold he's made an appearance. Never mind that we are forecasted to receive 15cm of snow tonight...I'm living in the moment people so please stay with me. It is above 0 and the sun is shining so I'm smiling......until tomorrow that is.

The last few days I've been working at clearing out our ensuite as we've finally decided after fifteen years of living here, to give it a reno.

I reminded John that I was not a movie star and did not require those 1970 "hollywood lights". I'll keep you posted on the progress as they start tomorrow.

On the book front I've just started reading this....

Can't really tell you what it's like yet as I'm not that far into it but I'll let you know whether it's a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Oh and I've found a new fav blog which I follow religiously.....The Art of Doing Stuff...so laugh out loud funny that I check in everyday...love that Karen Bertelson. I heard she lives in Toronto, I wonder if she likes chai lattes?????

Fun At Blue & New Gallery Representation

The last few years we've been doing a mini getaway with the girls to Blue Mountain. I, who am not a downhill skier, love blue Mountain as not only do they have a great Starbucks for my favourite chai latte but there are also a variety of shops and galleries in the area for those of us who are terrified of careening down a snow packed hill at 60 km/hr.

And even though I didn't buy anything I loved walking around the quaint village and checking out all the shops.

The girls had a blast skiing....

On Saturday I took off for a visit with The Matilda Swanson Gallery. I had meant to meet with them months ago but life got in the way and this seemed the opportune time being in Blue Mountain and all. So I took in a few of my mixed media on cotton pieces and headed up the road to meet with Sue. She loved the work but was concerned about the size. The gallery mostly sells large works as that's what works best for them and that's what they move. So for the time being they are going to keep the work I gave them but would like me to head back in April with larger works on canvas. Nice gallery, nice people.

So this is a bare bones start of new piece....not a whole lot to show at the moment but it will eventually take shape when I figure out what I'm doing with it. I always start with a basic sketch and work from there but it's almost guaranteed to never end up resembling the original sketch which somehow appeals to me in a big way .... like a happy surprise.

Yesterday was Family Day here in the freezing province of Ontario which means a "holiday". We spent it just hanging out...... I wore my favourite socks of all time in honour of the day...

As the boyfriend is still here, we took him for a tour around the village which took all of about 10 minutes door to door, which was absolutely fine with me cause it was bitter cold. I told Holly that when the wind blew it felt as if I was being stabbed repeatedly with a hundred extra sharp icicles. She laughed and then quickly realized it was me that was making her laugh and returned to her normal eye rolling technique instead.

All in all a great "family day"....and ain't young love grand....

The View From Here

I simply love the view from my bedroom window.

It is the first thing I see every morning when I wake up and it reminds of how blessed I am.

I do yoga by this window as it is the perfect backdrop to a peaceful practice.

Counting my blessings today for sure.

Sierah is due home for reading week and is bringing her new boyfriend. We haven't met him face to face but have "cyber" met him through Skype. Should be an interesting few days... she's probably crossing her fingers that we won't do anything horribly embarrassing like dragging out her baby pics, drinking one too many glasses of red wine or "oh no" the dreaded dancing to Madonna in the livingroom......but perhaps for this visit I could squeeze in Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" which I'm really liking....surely that wouldn't be too traumatizing an experience.

Come to think of it there are probably a million things we could do that would embarrass her but most of them would just be us being us. ... maybe we're just freaks that way. Sometimes when we are in the kitchen cooking and listening to music we'll just start dancing....I don't think that's weird but you should see Holly's face....never has a look of horror been observed on such lovely a face. There was a time when she would give us a warning like "if you are going to continue to do that I'm leaving" although now she has graduated to simply running down the hall to her room and slamming the door.

Sheesh... teenagers...

Sierah told me last week that "the boyfriend" has a good appetite and likes Mexican food so I guess that's my clue to get in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans. I'm not making a roast for sure cause for some odd reason that is not a meal I've ever mastered. I've followed tons of recipes and they always end up tasting like shoe leather although my sister gave me a slow cooker this last Christmas and I must say things are improving somewhat.

Well, guess I should sign off as there is an errand list as long as my arm today. First up is heading out to pick up groceries and then of course that Lady Gaga CD

Yesterday I was down in the city dropping off new work at The Village Gallery.

I love Megan, she is the Art Consultant at the Gallery and has such an amazingly positive vibe about her. Just one of those rare people that make you feel good just by being around them. Anyway whenever I'm there we always have a good chat while poor John runs up and down the stairs bringing the new work in. Their spring show Bloom will be up and running come April....oh just the thought of April and spring can bring a smile to my face.

After our visit to the Gallery we left to meet up with my Mom and by sister for a quick bite here and then on to see my new favourite guy Max

It was a very quick in and out to the city with a warm chai latte thrown in there to keep me happy

This morning I woke up to a cold and bitter morning and could hear the house creaking but when I looked out the window, all was forgiven because ........ Oh the view of the sun coming up behind the trees was spectacular........

At times I forget how lucky I am to live where I do.

I'm sure this happens to everyone as life moves forward and we get caught up in our busy lives with kids, jobs, friends, commitments..... but then you have a day like yesterday when John and I decided to take a walk in the park behind our house and it all becomes clear.

Just a simple moment in time in which you feel so damn grateful you almost can't stand yourself.

Being a bit slow on the uptake, I only just realized last week that I could create my own website through a program called iWeb on my mac. I spent the better part of a day reading through the manual and nervously biting my fingernails as a "techie" I am not. The freedom of creating my own site was so exciting though as I could not only change text, pics and anything else my little heart desired but I had full control of the entire site .... I even learnt what a hyperlink was.

So the last little while I've been playing around and voila ... a site is born. It is still "a work in progress" and not yet completed but here's a sneak peek so far........

Today I've been sorting through some photos from last summer and came upon this one. Such a gorgeous shot of Lake Superior and if I try real hard I can feel the sun on my face and the breeze off the lake......oh, .........back to reality as it is only January and yes, it is still snowing. So if you're looking for a diversion like a great book or interesting movie ... I've got a suggestion.

I saw Revolutionary Road a few weeks ago.

In a nutshell, The Wheelers, April and Frank are a young couple living the American Dream in 1955. She's a housewife caring for their two children while Frank works in the city as a salesman. They live on Revolutionary Road. Frank is dissatisfied with his job and April's dream has always been to become an actress but she has resigned herself to the life she now lives.

You can tell that this isn't a "feel good" flick and it's not. Watching Revolutionary Road is like watching a train wreck you know is going to happen but you simply can't turn away and the reason you can't turn away is because of the stellar performances by both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and the incredible writing. It is depressing (NOT a date movie), brutally honest and disturbing. In some instances you feel like a voyeur as the movie reveals itself so intimately. If you appreciate a film that is thought provoking and brilliantly explores the dark essence of family/life relationships and broken dreams...give it a go. It will stay with you a long time after the movie ends.

For Christmas Kelly gave me " Room" by Emma Donoghue. This was a book I could not put down. I've attached a You Tube clip that will give you a good understanding of what the book is about. It is a powerhouse. At first I thought the premise is of a young boy and his mother living in captivity in Room would be terribly sad but the entire novel is told with Jack doing the narrative and for some reason it does not come across that way. Riveting, chilling, intriguing and beautifully written. Another piece of art that stays with you long after you've closed the book.

Everything's Coming Up Yummy

Friday night I cooked for Kelly and I must say we had a "grand old time". Her contribution was a yummy bottle of Napa Valley red, actually she brought two bottles but I knew sharing one would be far more than enough unless I wanted to wake up with a splitting headache screaming for Advil in the a.m. Lots of laughs and good food always = good times...

So with all the talk of food these days and my renewed vigour when it comes to meal planning, I decided to make Holly homemade blueberry pancakes for breakfast on Sunday. O.k., let's take a step back because I didn't actually decide that but when I looked in the cupboard and realized there was no mix hanging around .....it was then that I decided. Just wanted to clear that up. So throwing my confidence around me like a coat, I found a five star recipe online and nailed it. Surprisingly enough it was dead easy and according to Holly "delicious" which is quite a compliment since she's a teenager...enough said. Of course anything would taste yummy smothered in this

Lately I've become absolutely obsessed with my newest find......Epicurious!

Not that I'm a crappy cook to begin with as I have been known to whip up quite a tasty meal. My issue lies in the "what to make for dinner tonight" category. I, like many others, have fallen into the rut of making the exact same meals week after week.

Spagetti.......Baked Chicken.......Salmon Patties with Rice

Now don't get me wrong because it does taste great or good depending on who you ask but it's just soooooo damn boring and predictable. That is until........Epicurious.

I'm not going to blabber on about all of the sites many virtues only to say it has made my meal planning all the easier and more exciting.

Last week I made Thai Beef w/Noodles and John ate two helpings and couldn't stop raving about it. When I made Seared Wild Salmon with new potatoes and Dijon Broth....yum.....Holly loved this.

So Friday night is "girls night" and my friend Kelly is coming over for dinner prepared by moi. She has been talking to be about the major health benefits of coconut for months now so being the consumate host that I am, I wanted to cook something in which coconut milk was one of the main ingredients. Click onto Epicurious, type in coconut milk and voila .. up pops dinner for Friday night.

African Curried Coconut Soup with Chickpeas and Chicken served with warm Naan Bread....

I love Epicurious but I think I already said that............
